ADEREMI, JCA (Delivering the Leading Judgment): This is an appeal against the ruling of Hon. Justice C.O. Segun, Chief Judge of Lagos State as he then was, delivered on the 28th of March, 2000.

The respondent who was the plaintiff in that court claiming against the appellant who was the defendant in that court, the following reliefs:

(1) The sum of ₦50,000,000.00 (fifty million naira) against the defendant being general, aggravated and exemplary damages for the defamatory statement concerning the plaintiff made by the defendant in a radio interview he granted the British Broadcasting Corporation (B. B. C.) on 15th January, 1997 which interview was widely broadcast world wide and published in the 16th January, 1997 edition of THE PUNCH and other newspapers circulating within Lagos State and Nigeria generally; and the libel contained in a press statement issued by the defendant on 16th February, 1997 which said press statement was widely published in the 17th February, 1997 edition of …
